Acrylics are a great way to keep your nails looking perfect for weeks on end, however, pesky chips, lifting and breakage can all get in the way of nail perfection! If you’re looking for how to make acrylic nails last longer, you’ve come to the right place; here at Blend Salon, we’re talking all things acrylics, divulging some of our top acrylic care tips to keep your nails looking gorgeous all the way through to your next salon trip.
How long do acrylic nails last?
The first question is – exactly how long do acrylic nails last?
Well, generally, it depends on a few factors, the key ones being how quickly your natural nails grow and how well you take care of them. Acrylic nails are exceptionally strong and with the right care will last 2-3 weeks, after which they will begin to naturally grow out. Without the right care and maintenance, your acrylics can lift, chip or peel sooner than the 2-3 week mark.
How to make acrylic nails last longer
We’ve all been there; one more week until payday, and two-week-old acrylics that are beginning to have seen better days. So, is there a way to make acrylic nails last longer?
While nothing can be done about the natural growing out process, there are a number of ways you can ensure your acrylics are looking their best until your next salon visit. Be sure to:
- Visit a trusted nail technician. A bad or inexperienced technician can damage your nails, making acrylics deteriorate at a much faster rate. Always check reviews online if you’re visiting someone new, and make sure you’re completely happy and confident with your choice.
- Be careful doing housework. Put down that scrubbing brush! Strong chemicals often found in cleaning products can damage your nails. Soaking acrylics in warm soapy water is also bad news, as it can cause them to lift. Make sure you’re fully equipped with a quality pair of rubber gloves before you dive into any housework, and keep your nails looking spic and span for longer.
- Avoid pressure on your nails. We all recognise the sound of acrylics tapping on a phone or keyboard. But the truth with this is, putting too much unnecessary pressure on your acrylics can mean you need them replaced more frequently. Try, where possible, to type or pick things up using as much of the pad of your finger as possible, rather than getting the nail involved.
- Top up your topcoat. Lock in that glossy finish and prevent chips by topping up your topcoat at home. At Blend Salon, you can explore Top Coats for use with a UV/LED lamp, or the Air Dry Top Coat to seal and protect your nails for longer.
How to care for acrylic nails
The right care and maintenance are vital for keeping your acrylics looking their absolute best until your next top-up at the salon. When it comes to how to care for acrylic nails, alongside the tips above, you should also ensure you’re engaged in a regular handcare routine to keep your hands and nails healthy.
The key with hand and nail care is to avoid your skin drying out, as this not only leaves you with unsightly hands but can lead to damage and lifting of your acrylics. Try to avoid any products that will dry out your hands and nails, for example, alcohol-based hand sanitisers, and be sure to moisturise regularly – especially after washing your hands.
You should also moisturise your cuticles daily with cuticle oil to keep your nails happy and healthy. Finally, apply heavier hand cream before bed to wake up with hands and nails that look and feel fantastic!
